About Me

Dr. Miller rejoined the faculty at UT Health San Antonio in 2017. He brings a unique perspective to cardiac surgery and resident education having practiced for 20 years in the private setting and 12 years in the academic arena. His main area of interest are program improvement, resident training and adult cardiac surgery.

Dr. Miller earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio in 1979. He completed his General Surgery Residency at UT Health San Antonio under the auspices of J. Bradley Aust in 1984. He further trained in Thoracic Surgery at UT Health San Antonio under the leadership of J. Kent Trinkle and Frederick Grover and completed his training in 1986. He is currently board certified in Thoracic Surgery.
He was in private practice in his hometown of Amarillo, Texas when Dr. Trinkle recruited him back to UT Health San Antonio in 1992 to join the faculty with Dr. John Calhoon and Dr. Edward Sako. He was actively involved in the heart and lung transplant programs and residency training. He served as chief of Thoracic Surgery and chief of Surgery at the Audie Murphy VA Hospital in San Antonio. He and Dr. Sako were awarded a Clinical Center of Excellence for Cardiac Surgery at the VA during this time period.
In 2002 Dr. Miller was recruited to private practice in Port Arthur, Texas to lead a cardiac surgery program. In a few years his program was awarded a Solucient Top 100 Hospital designation in Cardiac Surgery.
