About me

About Me

B. D. Tiner grew up in Arkansas and received his undergraduate Bachelor of
Science degree in Zoology from Arkansas State University in 1972. He went on
to earn his Doctor of Dental Surgery at the University of Tennessee College of
Dentistry in 1975 and his Doctor of Medicine at the University of Texas Medical
School at San Antonio in 1987.
Dr. Tiner’s post-graduate training included an Internship in Anesthesia at the
University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio from 1980-81. He
successfully completed a residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 1984
at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.
Dr. Tiner is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial
Surgery and a Life Fellow of the American Association of Oral and
Maxillofacial Surgeons. He is also a Fellow in the American College of
Surgeons and the American College of Dentists. Additionally, Dr. Tiner is an
active member and Past President of the Southwest Society of Oral and
Maxillofacial Surgeons and the Texas Society of Oral and Maxillofacial
Surgeons. In 2009, Dr. Tiner was awarded the Texas Society of Oral and
Maxillofacial Surgeons’ L. Jack Bolton Distinguished Service Award and in
2013 he was awarded the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial
Surgeons’ Presidential Achievement Award. Most recently in 2022, he was
honored to receive the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry
Outstanding Alumnus Award.
Dr. Tiner proudly served as President of the American Board of Oral and
Maxillofacial Surgery in 2008-09 and as President of the American Association
of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons from 2020-21. He became only the twelfth
individual to serve as President of both organizations.
From 1989-1996, Dr. Tiner served full-time on the faculty of the Department of
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the Department of Surgery at the University
of Texas HSC in San Antonio. His academic career culminated as the
residency program director in 1995-96 for the OMS training program at the
University of Texas HSC in San Antonio as a tenured Associate Professor.
Currently, he serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the OMS Department
at UT Health San Antonio. Dr. Tiner has authored or co-authored numerous
scientific publications and book chapters during his career.
Dr. Tiner retired from active private practice in 2021 after twenty-five years
with Alamo Maxillofacial Surgical Associates. During his surgical career his
practice encompassed all areas of oral and maxillofacial surgery with a focus
on the correction of jaw deformities (orthognathic surgery), the surgical
management of obstructive sleep apnea, pathology of the maxillofacial region
and dental implants.
From 1975-2000, Dr. Tiner proudly served as a Dental Officer in the United
States Navy and retired as a Navy Captain. He has been married to his wife,
Brenda, for fifty-two years and they have two adult children, Lauren and Colby.
