About Me

Dr. Joseph Alderete is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with advanced fellowship training in musculoskeletal oncology. After graduating from West Point and earning his medical degree from Penn State College of Medicine, he completed his residency at Eisenhower Army Medical Center and a fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN.

During his 30-year military career, Dr. Alderete served as Chief of Orthopaedic Oncology and Medical Director of the Center for the Intrepid at Brooke Army Medical Center where he led groundbreaking work in advanced amputee and limb salvage care. He deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan serving in key surgical and leadership roles and helped establish national research collaborations dedicated to improving outcomes for patients with major limb injuries.

Dr. Alderete is recognized internationally for his expertise in sarcoma care, limb salvage, osseointegration and advanced prosthetic integration. He has received numerous military and academic honors including the Legion of Merit and the Order of Military Medical Merit.

At UT Health San Antonio, Dr. Alderete continues to advance patient care and research as Director of the Limb Optimization Program. His work focuses on delivering innovative surgical solutions, improving human performance and helping patients regain mobility, independence and quality of life.
