About Me
Dr. Joseph Basler currently serves as the chief of urology at the South Texas Veterans Administration Health Care Systemand is program director for the UT Health Science Center department of urology. He is also currently president of theTexas Urologic Society, representing over 400 urologists.Dr. Basler is the principal investigator of several southwest oncology clinical trials open at the UT Health Science Center and STVAHCS campuses and serves on the national coordinating committee for a large Veterans Affairs cooperative trial in treatment of advanced prostate cancer.
Dr.Basler received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Missouri. Between these, he completed his doctorate in molecular biology at the State University of New York in Buffalo. After a residency in urology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, hewas the recipient of a three-year American Cancer Society Career Development Award in urologic oncology and stayed on as faculty at Washington University from 1990 through 1998. In 1998, he joined the faculty at the UT Health Science Center division of urologic surgery as associate professor. After the division of urology became the department of urology, Dr. Basler was promoted to professor. In addition to serving as scientific reviewer for several prominent urologic journals, he has published numerous scientific papers, book chapters, and has edited a textbook on urologic oncology.
